KUC getting started

You are a first time KUC user and do not want to read all the documentation.

In this example, I use a fresh Win7x64 SP1 system with all updates -Windows Update (WU) offers- installed.

Only two programs will be offered by WU (Silverlight and .Net 4).

As you can see, there are 68 updates for windows installed.

  1. Create 2 folders c:\wu and c:\wu\repo

  1. Download the latest KUC version http://windows-update-checker.com/download/

  2. Save the .zip file in c:\wu and copy the included “KUC UpdateChecker.exe” into c:\wu.

  3. Run KUC as administrator

  4. Agree the Security advice

  5. You have started KUC as admin, now you can create KUC’s input file “packages.txt”

  1. With clicking on YES, KUC calls dism to create its input file.

  2. If no problems are found (see below) you will see the following screen. Click continue.

For the first run leave everything unchanged and continue.
If you have any additions (like IE9) installed, KUC will find.

  3. On Select Check Options 2 make sure “use ‘forced LDR install’ packages” and
“check for updates that are present as GDR and LDR” are checked and press “Continue”.

10.         After doing some checks you will see the Overview 1 and 2.

You have to remove 63 and to add 331 updates.
When you compare the 63 packages to remove with the 68 updates installed,
nearly every update that windows had offered and you have installed,
will be replaced with a better version. Note: one update can have more than one package.

11.         One of KUC’s most powerful features is to download missing updates.
So the first thing we do on the “Select Output Options” screen
is to press the “Download” button.

You can see that your windows update repository folder is empty.
329 files are missing. KUC will download all needed updates. So you don’t have to
download a single 7z file. In this case you have to download round about 484 MB.
That’s much less than the normal size of 931MB of a 7z update file.
If you already have downloaded some updates, place them in the c:\wu\repo folder
or point to the folder where those updates are.
Also, note that you have to add 331 packages but only 329 updates to download.
The difference results from the two “ADDLATER” updates.

12.         After download finishes the screen will lock like this:

You If you don’t have Excel or an other program to view .csv
Make sure you select
“Create output file for Notepad” and “Open KUC-output File with Notepad”
before you continue.

13.         Last but not the latest, you get to “Program End”. Press Exit to leave the program.

14.         Note the programs and their order to run.

15.         We follow the way on the info screen and run “Remove_OLD.cmd” as administrator.

16.         If you get a warning, do not press any key until you have disabled windows update.

17.         Start windows update; Change settings and disable it before you continue.

This will prevent a race between WU and the remover, which often ends up in BAD packages.

18.         After disabling WU you can press the “any key” and continue.
The Remover starts its work.

19.        IMPORTANT: Do NOT skip the reboot after removing updates.

20.         After system has restarted, we follow the info of number 14 and run the Copier.

This command file will copy the first portion of files form the repo to the Normal and LDR folders.
If you look at number 12, we have limited the number of updates to install in one run to 75.
Note: you do not have to run the copier as admin. So, just double-click on it.

21.         After the copier finishes, it informs you, if he could not find some files.

22.         Now we are ready to start the update (has also to be run as admin).

23.         If you get Error 740, you did not start the updater as admin,
close the cmd.exe-window and restart at number 22.

24.         The updater installs the updates in two portions, first the “Normal” updates,

Press any key

25.         Then the LDR updates.

26.         Press any key to reboot.

27.         After reboot take a quick look on in the Task Manager.

After update installation, often mscorsvw.exe and TrustedInstaller.exe are running
wait until they become idle (CPU=0).

28.         After the system becomes idle go back to number 4. (see above) and install the next bulk of updates.

I did this 3 times and now I want to do some additional changes.
(I did not download any missing files or remove any updates until now)
On run takes round about 10min on my system

29.         I start with the picture at number 8. (see above)

I want to be able to view old help files,
and I do not have an AMD processor, so I select the two additions above.

30.         I use Group Policy and my windows runs in a virtual machine,
so I select those additional features.

You may have noticed that the ‘force LDR’ and GDR/LDR options are automatically selected.

31.         The updates for the new selected additions and features will be added with the next run of the updater.
You may have noticed that the ‘force LDR’ and GDR/LDR options are automatically selected.

32.         Press download to get rest of the missing updates.

With the two “ADDLATER” updates and the new additions and features, there are 11 missing files.
I also changes the number of simultaneously downloads to 9 (the maximum) to speed up.

33.         After finishing download and continue you get the “Program End”

34.         And “INFO” screen.

35.         As advised I start the remover

36.         After the “Remove_OLD” finishes

37.         And Reboot

38.         I start the Copier

39.         And then the Updater

1.              A last reboot

2.              We start KUC a last time

The additions and features I selected in the last run are now automatically checked.
Nothing to add and nothing to remove.

3.              Nothing to Remove, to Add, No files missing, already installed.

There is only on update installed that may need additional actions. Look inside of KUC’s
output file for additional information.

4.              Now we change WU back to Auto

5.              WU will check for Updates

6.              IF KUC is satisfied ó Windows update is satisfied
